[Update: Released] Cosmonautica is a mix of Elite and The Sims, and it is now available in early access

Cosmonautica is an upcoming space trading and combat game from developers Chasing Carrots which is currently in a sort of beta test release right now. The game, as described by the developers, is a mix of Elite and The Sims, which makes for a pretty interesting hybrid title. We actually reported on this game arriving onto Android back in May 2015, but now it is available in an early access edition.

Update: August 4th, 2015 9:06am PST: Cosmonautica has left early access and is now available for everyone on Google Play. You can grab a copy of this game through the same link below that was used for the early access.

This game puts players on a mediocre spaceship which they control and are off exploring the universe for fame and glory. Like any good ship, it can’t be run by yourself, no matter how good of a captain you are. So players will not only be floating around space trading goods to make money, you’ll also need to manage your crew on top of that. In other words, this isn’t your typical trading sim game. You will need to make sure you are pulling in a profit with each trade if you plan to upgrade your ship to hold more cargo and better defend itself.

Upgrading your ship is important in this game. Adding more storage space so you can hold more cargo will mean that you can make bigger trades and earn more money at once. It also means you will be able to better defend yourself against threats that come along with being a big space trader, such as pirates who want to loot all your goodies. The galaxy you are flying around in also happens to be procedurally generated, so it won’t always be the same each time you start over.

As for the good you will be trading, there is everything from your standard resources to the more rare cargo which will fetch a much higher price, but will be a lot harder to find. There is also the illegal goods that you can transport as well, should you want to be a bit more criminal with your activities. Each solar system has their own traits, so some goods will be exclusive to that region as will the pricing/demand for certain goods.

Since you have to manage your crew, your ship customizing is almost a bit more detailed than just selecting stuff from a menu. individual rooms are upgradeable as well as the ships entire look can also be customized. Combat is also more interactive as well, with different maneuvers and tactical actions that you can do.

Cosmonautica features cross-platform gameplay, so you can play on your PC and then continue the same game on your Android device when you head out on the go. If you’re interested in checking this game out, you can actually snag a copy of the early access edition for $6.79 off of Google Play and there are no IAPs either. You can check out the game’s trailer in the video below as well as additional screenshots.
