Pepperbox Studios has launched their deckbuilding roguelike Dice of Kalma. The game is out right now on mobile for both Android and iOS, and on PC through Steam. It lets you fight directly against Kalma, the Finnish god of death!
Dice of Kalma is Pepperbox’s first mobile title
The game throws you into a slow-burning standoff with Kalma, the grim guardian of the Underworld. Your only way out is through smart dice management and a deck full of skulls.
Each run lets you spend time rolling, rerolling, and scoring every point possible. Kalma reacts with escalating challenges, so even when you think you’ve cracked the game, he tends to raise the stakes on the next turn.
Dice of Kalma offers a huge set of tools. Over 200 skulls let you build decks in different ways, like something that can salvage a terrible roll or something that rewards making reckless choices.
You can tinker with synergies, comparing skull effects and figuring out which combinations make even the worst dice flip into a winning hand. On that note, catch a glimpse of the game below.
Every hand you play has to activate as many skulls as possible. Meanwhile, upgrading hands becomes part of the push to survive each new layer of the Underworld.
The dice phase is its own small puzzle
You select and reroll unwanted dice or pace your rerolls to avoid burning through resources too early. Or you can go all in when chasing an ideal outcome. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes Kalma stops it, and you have to start over from scratch.
The game offers roguelike replayability, so don’t worry when you run out of hands and the run collapses. In fact, the guardian grows a little too fond of players who keep returning for another round!
