Friday Night Funkin’ has landed on mobile! It’s a rhythm game, which first released on Newgrounds in 2020. It’s developed by a group of indie developers who are collectively known as The Funkin’ Crew Inc.
Friday Night Funkin’ started as an entry for Ludum Dare 47 back in October 2020. It soon grew into a giant internet phenomenon with more than 200 million players. The game’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by Flash games.
Want to spend some time with your Girlfriend?
Friday Night Funkin’ is about rhythm battles. You, as Boyfriend, face off against a bunch of characters to win the right to keep dating Girlfriend. There’s her overprotective father trying to stop you. And there’s also a whole parade of eccentric people ready to ruin your date plans.
The game is about music, so that’s really where it flexes. There are over 60 original tracks loaded in. Most of the soundtrack is composed by KawaiSprite and Saruky from the development team. But it also ropes in big names like Lotus Juice, known from Persona 3, and Kohta Takahashi from Ridge Racer 4.
Another speciality of the game is its visuals. It has a hand-drawn art style made with Adobe Flash, which brings a 90s cartoon vibe. Newgrounds veterans will probably be able to relate to that style a lot more than the new folks.
Get Some Friday Night Funkin’!
The game has been open-source from the start, which has inspired countless mods and a devoted community. The devs are even cooking up a full version of the game called Friday Night Funkin’: The Full Ass Game, funded through Kickstarter.
Speaking of the devs, The Funkin’ Crew Inc. is led by Cameron Taylor, David Brown, Isaac Garcia, and evilsk8r. Even Tom Fulp, the founder of Newgrounds, helped oversee the gameplay. The game also has voice work from JohnnyUtah.
