From Software considering jumping into mobile gaming in the future

From Software is a Japanese company that has developed some great games in the past such as Dark Souls, Demon’s Soul and are currently finishing up some rather large projects such as Armored Core V and Mobile Gundam Suit: Unicorn. Now they are contemplating their next move and it could be mobile gaming.

Speaking to GameTrailers, the head of R&D over at From Software, Masanori Takeuchi, and executive producer Eiichi Nakajima said they are now contemplating their next projects and are taking a look at the mobile gaming industry.

We know what butters our bread, obviously it’s consumer games. That’s where we see some of our key strengths. That being said, as developers, we like to do new things and new challenges will help us mature and grow as a developer. Smartphones and tablets are an interesting challenge for us.

They go on to say:

If you look at the install base of the two different types — 3DS and PS Vita versus smart phone and tablets — they’re incredibly different. For us, trying to find a way to appeal our content, the sort of games that we’re good at, to a new audience is going to be a challenge.”/p>

and regarding what the focus is when it comes to their projects:

We’re looking for more rich, in-depth network capabilities than just head-to-head play and cooperative stuff. We want networking to be on a much deeper level.

Amazingly enough, From Software already has three mobile titles in development although they may never get released outside of Japan. These are King’s Field Mobile 2, Armored Core Mobile 2, and Armored Core Mobile Online. With the news that they are considering more mobile products, it looks like the chances are improving that we will start to see their games arriving on Android outside of Japan.

It is good to see more major companies taking at look at mobile gaming as a viable platform, considering there is millions of dollars to be made by actually bring top notch games to mobile. Good stuff.
