Harebrained Schemes pushes back the release of Shadowrun Returns

Harebrained Schemes had quite the successful Kickstarter campaign for their upcoming title Shadowrun Returns, a rebirth of the Shadowrun series but on multiple platforms including Android. Originally the company had a January 2013 release time frame for Shadowrun Returns but now that has changed and a new time frame has been set of May or June of next year instead.

Usually when you hear about delays we think of not-so-good scenarios regarding a game’s development. For Shadowrun Returns it is actually the opposite, with Harebrained Schemes citing that because of the huge success of their Kickstarter campaign and meeting every stretch goal, that a January release isn’t feasible anymore with such a large features list to get integrated into the game.

It might’ve worked for the scope of the game we originally envisioned but as our ambitions (read that “features list”) grew, so did the time we needed to deliver.” He also said that going from top-down view to isometric took extra work as well. – Producers Mitch Gitelman

There is one downside to all of this though which is the fact that they had to cut some features to stay within budget. One feature cut was the ability to recruit your friends’ characters into the game. That means Shadowrun Returns will be a little less social than originally planned. Development is, however, half way done and the next things the company is focusing on is magic, tech abilities and the story.
