HTC sold 15,000 Vive VR headsets in the first 10 minutes of pre-orders going live

As we reported last week, the HTC Vive Consumer Edition VR headset bundle went live with pre-orders on February 29th, 2016. One concern that some people has with the possible success of this headset was the pricing, with the pre-order package coming in at $799, which is $200 more than the Oculus Rift.

The HTC Vive package comes with the headset itself, room scale movement sensors, and an HMD featuring a built-in camera and phone, as well as two of the grip controllers which you will use for anything related to using your hands. So it isn’t just the headset. Still, at $799 it isn’t the most affordable VR headset out there in the least.

However, pre-orders went very well for HTC, with the Vive package netting the company over 15,000 orders within the first 10 minutes of the pre-orders going live, according to Shen Ye, a VR product specialist at HTC. That’s roughly $12 million in sales which means this jump into Virtual Reality for HTC is already starting to look like it’ll pay off. The partnership with Valve probably has a good chunk to do with the headset’s success.

If you happen to have snagged a pre-order package for the HTC Vive, you should expect your headset to arrive at some point in May 2016, which is when HTC has pre-orders slated to ship out.
