[Update: Not For Consumers] Nvidia’s upcoming Shield Console may be getting a second 500GB option for $299

One device a lot of us are waiting to get our grubby little hands on is Nvidia’s upcoming Shield Console which will be having pre-orders going live soon. Up until now there has only been one model known, which was the $199 and comes with 16GB of storage. However, it appears that there may be a second model available as well with a lot more storage.

Update: April 23rd, 2015 1:39pm PST: So we just heard back from our friends at Nvidia regarding this apparent 500GB model. As it turns out, this will NOT be an option available to consumers. What this actually was is a mistake listing. The 500GB model that appeared was a model for developers which was mistakenly listed on the website as something that can be purchased. Hopefully the hype this generated will make Nvidia think about actually releasing this as a model we can buy. Here is the official statement we got from Nvidia:

“A SHIELD partner development kit was erroneously listed on our website today as a product. For clarification, NVIDIA has not launched a 500 GB SKU for SHIELD. The website has been updated with our announced SHIELD product, available soon at $199.99”. – Nvidia

Appearing on the official website for the Shield Console, a new option has appeared for a ridiculous 500GB storage model which would cost $299 instead of the regular $199 for the 16GB model. That would provide all of us hardcore gamers a hell of a lot more storage, something that we would definitely need and something the 16GB model wouldn’t be able to provide. And with a price tag of $299, that still makes it ridiculously well-priced.

Other hardware/software specs for the Shield console include a microSD slot and two USB 3.0 port, MicroUSB 2.0 port, Ethernet port, HDMI port, Tegra X1 chipset with a Maxwell GPU coming with 3GB of RAM, H.265 decoder for 4K screens, Android TV with Google Cast, 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound, and more. That is for the 16GB model. The 500GB model should feature the same hardware and software but considering up until now Nvidia hasn’t mentioned a 500GB model, the other hardware could also be different.

We’ve reached out to Nvidia for confirmation on the 500GB model being a thing as well as additional details like if that will be available for pre-order in May as well and if all the other hardware will remain the same. We’ll post an update once we hear back from them.
