Over half a year on from the game’s release, Square Enix has added an offerwall to Octopath Traveler seemingly out of nowhere in a new update. As you can imagine, the fans are not happy.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is an RPG that takes place before the events of the first game. The game came to Android in July of 2022, and carries the torch of it’s predecessor with it’s expansive story, engaging combat, and visually pleasing graphics.

Wrong Move From The Developer

The Octopath Traveler offerwall appeared in a recent update, giving players the option to perform a bunch of in-game requests in exchange for gems. Most of these requests take you out of the game, and invite you to complete surveys, buy an IQ test, or even make a Manscaped purchase.

Square Enix’s decision to add an offerwall to Octopath Traveler has outraged the audience. A Reddit post under r/gachagaming has seen the comments section evolve into a punching bag for the developer’s decision…

One Reddit user, @Goldenrice, writes “They couldnt just give out more rubies to conpensate for the stinginess of this game. They had to stick with the stinginess and lock these “free rubies” behind playing other games. Just gives you insight into sqex’s greed.”

The comments section also saw Reddit users talking about how they would be switching to other RPGs due to the new addition.

One Reddit user, @Alchadylan, writes “Another Eden is always welcome to all.”

Another user, @Liegence, writes “So glad I dropped this asap.”

What Is An Offerwall?

It’s safe to say that fans are certainly displeased with the new offerwall, but what exactly is an offerwall?

Offerwalls are a way a studio monetises a free game. They’re simple; the offerwall gives you the option to complete a certain activity, such as playing a sponsored game, and the game rewards you, usually with in-game goodies.

What’s so despised about offerwalls is that players feel like they create a sense of shameless greed from the developer. On top of this, the offers can often be a bit demanding and ridiculous, such as the Manscaped purchase offer in Octopath Traveler.
