The cosy charm of the board game Calico is getting turned it into a digital experience by Monster Couch. Quilts and Cats of Calico is a new game on Android that is full of warm colours, intricate patterns and cats.
It’s a Game that Requires Strategy but in a Laid-Back Way
The main goal in Quilts and Cats of Calico is to piece together a quilt using different fabric scraps. You have to make sure the colours and patterns work together to earn points. The better your quilt, the more likely you are to attract cats.
These cats have their own choices and personalities and you can even customize your cats. You can pick their fur colour, name them and dress them up. During matches, the cats will do their own thing. Sometimes watching you play, sometimes napping and other times getting in the way like real cats do.
The digital version stays true to the core mechanics of the original board game but also adds some new features. The campaign mode introduces different scenarios and even some rule variations.
And then there’s the setting of a city where cats basically run the place. The game leans into a Ghibli-inspired world where you play as a traveling quilter trying to make a name for yourself. As you progress, you’ll meet quirky characters, face off against an opponent and stitch your way to the top of the city’s hierarchy.
If you’re playing solo, there’s an AI mode that lets you go at your own pace, adjusting difficulty. Quilts and Cats of Calico also has cross-platform multiplayer. There are weekly challenges and rankings too. You can jump into ranked games against random players.

Every turn, you have to place a tile and pick a new one from a limited supply. You might want to complete a certain pattern, so you have to decide whether you want to go for points, attract a cat or just sew on a button.
