Jagex has rolled out its Combat Modernisation update for RuneScape, marking the latest step in the game’s ongoing Road to Restoration. The update reworks the prevailing foundations of melee, ranged, and magic, the three original combat styles that have defined RuneScape for decades.

The launch follows three months of Combat Modernisation beta periods with community participation. Throughout the testing phases, players scrutinised the changes and gave feedback on them. With each beta cycle, the development team adjusted the power levels of tens of player abilities, corrected timing inconsistencies in others, and refined a range of perks.

The studio says that iterative feedback during this window directly shaped the final version now live in the main game. A Future of Combat video by Edimmuz accompanies the release. Watch it here if you’re interested.

Combat Modernisation sits within a broader roadmap first detailed during January’s RuneScape Ahead premiere video. Branded as the Road to Restoration, the plan outlines a sequence of updates for RuneScape for its 25th anniversary year.

Several of those initiatives have already been completed!

At the end of January, the game’s user interface received a visual pass to improve clarity, tidy up menus and icons, and make navigation more readable. In mid-February, an early game rebalancing update targeted the opening hours of play, adjusting skill progression across activities such as hunting, thieving, farming, and herblore.

Early quests, including Cook’s Assistant and Sheep Shearer were also modified to streamline the new player experience. And further changes are still to come. A March update will address the DailyScape, removing a large portion of daily activities that players had described as chore-like.

Character visuals are also in line for a significant revision. The two-part Player Avatar Update, scheduled for release in spring and autumn, will deliver the most extensive overhaul of player character models in over a decade.

RuneScape is available for free on the Google Play Store.
