RuneScape is asking its players to make one of the most significant decisions in the game’s long history. Jagex has opened a major community vote, aka the treasure hunter poll that could completely reshape how RuneScape handles monetisation.

Like microtransaction?

The classic MMO has opened a page online that needs your opinion. Starting today, you can cast your vote on whether Treasure Hunter, the game’s microtransaction feature, should be removed from the game altogether.

If the community vote crosses 100,000 total votes, Jagex will remove Treasure Hunter. Not only that, they will also take down over 220 gameplay-benefiting items associated with the system for years.

The items include 225 direct XP and skilling items, leaving only two types of purchasable offerings. They are capped Bonus XP per skill and cosmetic items with a more grounded, lore-friendly look.

Beyond that, Jagex would commit to a dedicated year-long integrity roadmap, tackling issues like the user interface, visual cohesion, auras, and the much-debated dailyscape mechanics. The plan also includes new cosmetic toggle options, letting you better control how cosmetics appear in-game.

The two-week voting period is being described by Jagex as a turning point for RuneScape’s future. The move also represents a massive shift toward what Jagex calls a more integrity-focused version of RuneScape, one that values gameplay achievements over paid advantages.

Jon Bellamy, CEO of Jagex, reflected on how the game’s approach to microtransactions has changed over the years. He said that the biggest concern has always been that microtransactions allowed players to skip core gameplay experiences, limiting the exploration of RuneScape’s world.

The voting process will remain open for 14 days. So, check it out here. Or just grab the game from the Google Play Store.
