Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is a new game inspired by Tove Jansson’s classic universe, now out on Android. The game is full of cosy quests and beautiful scenery that reflects nature. Music plays an important role, and so does the story.

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley brings open-world exploration and light environmental puzzles

Snufkin is a laid-back soul with a knack for music, exploration, and mild mischief. In this game, his mission is to undo the damage caused by the Park Keeper. He’s a rigid figure who has dotted the valley with ugly, restrictive parks that are running the natural land.

Along the way, Snufkin distracts police, knocks over statues, and pulls out signposts. His tools are quite simple, too. He uses musical instruments and a sense of purpose. And alongside him is a growing group of valley dwellers who want their home back.

The valley is alive with familiar faces, like Too-Ticky, Fillyjonk, Little My and others. There are over 50 characters, with some having very brief yet warm interactions.

Solving the puzzles requires musical mechanics. You use a harmonica, drum, or flute to influence the world around you, triggering reactions in animals and the environment. Each instrument creates a glowing field that interacts with nature in subtle ways.

Visually, the game is a stunner

The game has a watercolour storybook style that reflects Jansson’s illustrations. From meadows bathed in amber twilight to misty woodlands, there’s a careful restraint in how it presents its world.

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is more like a musical. So, the soundtrack had to be really good. Composed by Oda Tilset in collaboration with Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós, it justifies the entire journey.

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is now up for grabs on the Google Play Store. The first section of the game is free, while the whole game requires a one-time purchase.
