[UPDATE: Game Released] Square Enix announces their upcoming global release of Romancing SaGa 2 on Android

Announced by Square Enix via the game’s Twitter account, that they are going to be releasing the Android version of Romancing SaGa 2 globally. Originally released for the Super Famicom back in 1993, this game is set in the Kingdom of Avalon, where players begin the game assuming the role of King Leon, along with other characters (even through subsequent generations of characters) as the focus of the game shifts.

UPDATE: Monday, May 30th – 4:48 AM, PST: If you are fans of Square Enix games or fans of classic games, you are in luck. Not too long ago we reported that Romancing Saga 2 had been released, but not worldwide. If you have been waiting on this title, it should now be available for you to play too. It appears the game released worldwide several days ago, but we didn’t catch it with the large amount of releases that have been taking place. You can download this game for $17.99 in the Play Store. I know $17.99 sounds pretty steep, but at least there are no in-app purchases listed. You should be able to download the game at the links below.

The story is predicated on a legend that, long ago, there was a society that sought out ways to preserve their civilization, and ended up using magic to do so. Unbeknownst to them, this use of magic unleashed evil spirits into the realm, that eventually were finally defeated by seven heroes. As the legend goes, those 7 warriors are to return some day.

The gameplay for Romancing SaGa 2 is turn-based and allows for special formations, and contains character sprites akin to what Final Fantasy games originally made famous. As an aside, this game was the first in the franchise to utilize the glimmer function, where characters would learn new attacks in the heat of battle.

The game is slated to have new graphics for both backgrounds, as well as for battles, but will be retaining the characters sprites from the ’93 look. There are also supposed to be the new classes and dungeons that were added to the 2010 re-release of the game. While they didn’t announce any specific release date, their account does mention that it will “soon be released worldwide”. IF you have access, you can download the Japanese version off of Google Play.
