The Best New Games for Android This Week – Hero Realms, Barnard’s Star and More

Another week has gone the way of the dinosaurs, or it mostly has. It’s Saturday, the cryptozoological ancestor the the working week. And that means it’s time for us to take a look at the best games that have landed on the Play Store over the past seven days.

And while there might not have been a big-banner AAA release like we saw over the last month or so, we reckon it’s actually a really good crop. There’s card games, classic action-platformers and huge explosions. That’s pretty much all that anyone wants out of their gaming life, right?

You can click on the names of the games below to download them from the Play Store, and unless otherwise noted they’re premium. And if you’ve got your own fave from the last week that isn’t included, scream about it in the comments section.

Hero Realms

A deck-building card game with TCG elements that comes from the same family as the excellent Star Realms. It finds that perfect sweet spot between depth and accessibility and it looks pretty darn good, too. Plus it’s based on an award-winning physical game. You can play a decent chunk for free, then there’s an IAP to unlock the rest.

Magician Lord ACA NeoGeo

We’ll always have time for classic action-platformers from the early 90’s. And it’s nothing to do with how very, very old we are. Magician Lord is a lesser-known gem that was one of the original NeoGeo launch titles. And now it’s given a new lease of life with all the ACA trappings we’ve come to love.

Terramorphers

Not only is Terramorphers a brilliant turn-based strategy battler, it also sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon from when we were growing up. “Come on Kev, finish your breakie, Terramorphers is about to start!” Anyway, it’s all about building a character using different skills and powers and it’s pretty neat. It’s free with IAP.

Boom Mania

Boom Mania is the goblin-fronted take on Bomberman that none of us knew we wanted until right this second. You’re blowing up critters in fantasy-themed levels, setting fire to enormous bosses and upgrading your explosives and gear. It looks great, there are 45 levels to play through and you can ride a wolf. Done deal.

Barnard’s Star

An engaging, tactical turn-based scrapper that sees you picking from one of three different factions. Then you get to fight, whether you’re fighting against the AI or other people. There are different units to unlock and new powers to unleash. It just looks real good, give it a go.
