Dead Rails takes place in the old west, and what’s even more old west than desert and steam trains? Riding around on a horse. Dead Rails allows for that too, but you need to do a bit of extra work to get hold of a trusty steed. Our Dead Rails horse guide is here to explain how to get one, and what they can do.
Dead Rails is out now over on Roblox. If you want a guide for getting started, maybe also read how to play Dead Rails.

How To Get A Horse
There are currently several ways we know of to get a horse you can ride. We’ll explain all the ones we’re aware of.

Taming A Wild Horse
You can find herds of wild horses out in the desert. These mobs are passive, and will move away from any players that get close. They can also die if hit by the moving train.
In order to tame one, you need to buy a saddle from a General Store, which cost around $50. Once you have a saddle, you need to use the item on a wild horse in order to tame it. This sounds simple but can be a bit tricky, as horses do run away when approached.
The easiest way we’ve found is to try and get the horse between you and the (stopped) train and herd the horse in the train’s direction, so it runs up against the side of the train. A house, fort wall, or rock works just as well. Then it’s easy to put the saddle on. It helps if you have more players to coordinate the herding, but we’ve managed it on a solo run too.
Stealing An Outlaw Horse
We’ve also managed to take the horses used by Outlaws. With some glitchy hitboxes sorted out, you should be able to take out the Outlaw with firearms without harming the horse. One this happens, the horse will stop running, and should be free to hop on and start riding.
Finding A Farm
The rare Farm structure is easy to spot, as a large barn surrounded by a field of wheat. These often contain one or two zombies, and also often contain a horse, a saddle, a saddled horse and/or a horse cart.
Riding A Horse
Once you have a saddled horse, congrats! You have a new mode of transport. Horses aren’t as well-defended as an upgraded train, but they are faster than enemies, and they don’t need fuel. You can use weapons, and dismount at any time. Horses cannot jump.
With updates, you can now store a horse using the sack item. Just walk up to the horse and hit F to store it. This works with unsaddled horses too, if you can catch them.
You can now also pick your horse up like you would loot objects, making them easy to move around to convenient positions.
Beware! Lightning can, and often does, strike unattended horses in a lightning storm, and we’ve seemingly seen them killed even under shelter. It’s safer to store them away during these events.
