Yoko Taro Project 404 GAME RE:SET Announced

Sega has dropped the showcase confirming its new mobile title. It’s called 404 Game Reset, stylized as: 404 GAME RE:SET. The shots of that spooky little mask gave us the confirmation we’d been hoping for in our previous news piece. It’s a Yoko Taro project, and it’s shaping up to be just as off-the-wall as you’d expect.

The new game is officially in its pre-registration phase and has a full listing on Google Play as of the end of the stream. An official website is live and after days of speculation, we can finally find out what the NieR and Drakengard creator has in store for us.

As you might expect, it’s super weird.

Yoko Taro Has Not Toned The Oddness Down

404 GAME RE:SET is set in a dystopian society ruled by Sega. Yes, you read that right. Sega has taken over the world and everyone lives in the shadow of the blue hedgehog.

You are just another inhabitant of a world where Dr. Eggman features on traffic lights until they run into the mysterious X, who inspired them to fight back against the tyrannical games company.

Oddly enough, you receive help from humanoid versions of classic Sega arcade games, designed by illustrator Yugen. So far there’s Virtua Cop, After Burner, Virtua Fighter, and Outrun who wears red car armor.

There’s set to be more and we already can’t wait to see what they have in store in the future. Altered Beast and House of the Dead would definitely be interesting ones to see.

Gameplay Not Clear Yet

As far as 404 Game Reset’s gameplay goes, we don’t have a lot of firm information. The Google Play listing has a few gameplay screenshots, though they don’t tell us a lot.

One screenshot shows what appears to be a party setup with health bars, and a character battling strange geometric shapes floating through a grim, industrial backdrop.

Sega has promised rewards for those who pre-register, and these have kicked off in earnest. As of an hour after the announcement, they are already halfway to the first prize tier of fifty thousand players.

Where gacha games can start to get a little too samey at times, it can pay off to be a little bit strange.
