NVIDIA’s New Shield TV release may be getting all of the spotlight right now, and that won’t be stopping with the software either. The new Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade is currently being sent out to their new consoles, and includes virtually all of the features that the New Shield TV has.
Officially known as Shield Experience 5.0, the new upgrade includes an extensive list of features. The main feature is support for 4K HDR video streaming, currently available via Amazon and Netflix with more apps adding support in the future. NVIDIA Games unifies the GeForce Now, GameStream, and regular Android game libraries in one app. NVIDIA Gamestream now also supports 4K HDR streaming, and features lower latency when streaming games from your PC to the Shield TV. Various new games and apps—such as No Man’s Sky and the NFL and Twitter for TV apps—are also available for the Shield TV.
Upgrades specific to Android 7.0 Nougat include a recent apps page, picture-in-picture support, and a new settings menu. Other enhancements include writing to USB or SD card storage (which allows users to install apps onto USB external drives or microSD cards), and pause/play functionality on the Shield remote by double-tapping on the volume slider. Casting for HBO GO has also been added, as well as multi-speaker support for Plex. The Nest home security app makes its debut on the Shield TV, allowing users to watch up to 4 security cameras simultaneously from their TV.
