Animoca to develop games based off of Mr. Bean and Ultraman for Android

Android game developer Animoca have announced that they have secured the rights to develop two games for Android based off of two very different TV shows. One game will be based off of the British comedy series, which has also spawned movies as well, called Mr. Bean. The second game will be based off of the Japanese superhero Ultraman who has had numerous TV Shows, toys, and existing video games based off of him.

For those of you unfamiliar with either of these two characters, let us elaborate on them for you. Basically Mr. Bean is an idiot, or as some describe him, a child in a man’s body. Mr. Bean is played by actor Rowan Atkinson who has been in plenty of TV shows and movies as other characters as well, although his most famous one is pretty much Mr. Bean. Generally everything Mr. Bean doesn’t turns into a giant mess which is almost always pretty funny to watch.

One the flip side of things, Ultraman was a pop culture superhero some time ago, back before the likes of Power Rangers and other cheese ball heroes came to the forefront. Ultraman, while having a bit of a cheese ball feeling to him, was actually intended to be a bit more of a semi-serious type of show and hero (Referring to the older Ultraman), fighting back aliens trying to destroy Earth, and not like the ones that came out after him. Ultraman has had comics, cartoons, toys, video games, and god knows what else based off of him.

If you want to dive into the details of Animoca securing the rights to both of these, you can read the full press release below. Right now there isn’t much detail on what either game will be like, except we can assume Ultraman will be some sort of action game. As more details come out, we will keep you updated.

Games based on the popular British comedy show and Japanese pop culture icon coming soon to mobile platforms

Hong Kong – November 16, 2012 – Animoca, the mobile gaming developer and publisher behind hit apps such as Pretty Pet Salon, Pet Cafe, Top Models and many others, announced today it has secured the worldwide rights to develop and publish mobile games for Mr Bean, the hit British comedy television series, and Ultraman, the Japanese superhero and pop culture icon.

Animoca agreed to license Mr Bean from Tiger Aspect Productions Limited, one of the UK’s leading TV and film production companies, for worldwide distribution. Mr Bean is the title character of the endearing comedy series that first aired in the UK in 1990 and ultimately gained a large global following. Starring actor Rowan Atkinson playing what he describes as “a child in a grown man’s body,” the show has received numerous international awards for its slapstick comedy while inspiring an animated cartoon spin-off and two feature films. Mr Bean, played by Atkinson himself, even made an appearance in the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The license to produce mobile games based on Ultraman was granted to Animoca by Tsuburaya Productions Co., Ltd., a Japanese special effects studio. As the title character of the Japanese Tokusatsu television series that first aired in 1966, Ultraman is a super-powered humanoid from outer space who fights to protect the Earth from sinister aliens and rampaging monsters. Ultraman became a major Japanese pop culture phenomenon with significant international appeal, spawning dozens of sequels, spin-offs, imitations, parodies and remakes. Animoca’s license with Tsuburaya Productions is worldwide.

“We are very excited to secure the rights to two such entertaining, beloved and globally recognizable figures as Mr Bean and Ultraman,” said David Kim, co-founder and CEO of Animoca. “Our mission is to deliver first-rate games on tablets and smartphones, and we look forward to turning the incredible IPs from Tiger Aspect Productions and Tsuburaya Productions into apps that will extend and enhance the brands of Mr Bean and Ultraman.”
