Matajuegos has announced today that Atuel, their surrealist documentary game, is hitting PC and Android later this year. The Steam page is already up and running, letting players pre-register for the game. Google Play will follow soon hopefully.

Matajuegos is an indie co-op from Argentina who launched the game originally on itch.io in September 2022. It quickly grabbed attention for its unique blend of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay and stunning dreamlike visuals.

Later, Atuel snagged the ‘Innovation in Experience Design Award’ at IndieCade 2022 and many other awards as a unique documentary game. It has also been showcased at places like the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

So, What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?

Atuel is about the Atuel River Valley in Argentina, a region that’s very beautiful but has been affected by climate change. Atuel is more of an experience where you shapeshift into different animals and elements of the ecosystem, becoming a part of the landscape.

One moment you might be soaring through the sky, the next you’re flowing as the river itself. The game also has real-life interviews with historians, biologists, geologists and locals. They talk about the history of the region, its present state and the future that climate change is shaping.

Matajuegos collaborated with an international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to bring these stories to life. The visuals are what really make the game stand out. Inspired by the Cuyo desert, the game’s landscapes feel almost otherworldly.

Until the game opens pre-registration on Android, you can check out the Steam page or the official website for more info. Once it lands on mobile, it will have localization in seven new languages and full controller support.
