Netflix and Gameloft have dropped a new update for the Carmen Sandiego game where the titular character is travelling to Japan during the Cherry Blossom Festival. No, it’s not a vacation, she’s on her job.
While the people in Japan are busy enjoying the Sakura season, Carmen is diving headfirst into a new case. The event is called the Free FestiVILE, and it’s a limited-time event running from April 7th through May 4th.

The mission is to track down the thieves who’ve stolen the sacred Shinboku tree. You’ll be following leads, piecing together clues, and racing against the clock to find out who’s behind the crime.
You’ll be doing all that while soaking in some gorgeous Japanese scenery, from Tokyo shrines to the iconic cherry blossoms. There’s even a traditional happi coat you can unlock for Carmen to wear, in lieu of her usual red trenchcoat.
Speaking of new attires, why don’t you catch a glimpse of Carmen Sandiego in Japan’s Cherry Blossom below?
It’s Carmen Sandiego’s 40th Anniversary This Year!
If you grew up with the series, you’d love to know that the original theme song is back. The unforgettable tune from the Rockapella days is making a comeback in the game. You’ll get to hear it in the Standard Edition, and it’s part of the soundtrack for Deluxe Edition owners too.
Meanwhile, if you’ve seen the Netflix animated reboot, you’ll probably notice that the game pulls a lot of influence from it. There are the same high-stakes missions, clever capers and Carmen stealing from crooks to protect cultural treasures.
If you’re yet to try the game out despite having a Netflix subscription, get it from the Google Play Store. The cherry blossoms won’t bloom forever and neither will this caper last forever!
