Japanese game development studio Shiromofu Factory has dropped Dungeon Antiqua 2 on mobile globally. It’s a 1980-90’s inspired retro pixel art dungeon RPG, whose prequel, Dungeon Antiqua, launched in December 2024.
Yep, right from the 16-bit era
With aesthetics and design ideas reminiscent of classic SNES-era titles, Dungeon Antiqua 2 is a 2D dungeon hack-and-slash RPG. Its structure revolves around exploration and party developmentd and not lengthy narrative sequences.
The developers intentionally reduced elaborate story cutscenes, opting instead for short and simple dialogue and text segments. It’s meant to let players fill in the details of the world themselves. They’ve tried to recreate the feeling of returning to the cartridge era of gaming, where imagination filled the gaps between minimal storytelling and dungeon exploration.
Progress in Dungeon Antiqua 2 involves six different dungeons. Exploration uses a system associated with a character’s vision stat, so corridors and enemies only become visible depending on that attribute.
Movement through the areas combines with a symbol encounter system. Enemies appear directly in the environment rather than triggering invisible random encounters. It lets you avoid battles by dodging them or initiate combat by striking first to gain the advantage.
Combat unfolds through side-view battles in Dungeon Antiqua 2
Encounters contribute to character progression through skill points that you earn after victories. Once those points reach specific thresholds, job-specific abilities become available. You can switch roles and experiment with different combinations.
There are ten job classes in the game, including Monk and Archer. The story timeline is also connected to the previous entry. Dungeon Antiqua 2 takes place hundreds of years after the events of Dungeon Antiqua.

The game is now available on the Google Play Store for $1.99.
