Google FINALLY adds promo codes to the developer console for Google Play

One of the features that Google Play has been seriously lacking since its inception was the ability to use promo codes. Apple’s iTune store allows developers to make promo codes to give out copies of their games and apps, but it is something that Android has been missing all this time. Well it appears that Google has finally added the ability for developers to make promo codes as well through the developer’s console.

The lack of a promo code system up until now has made both the lives of developers and the media a bit of a pain in the ass. A lot of times developers want to give media outlets advanced/free copies of a game, or a free copy of a paid games or application to their fans, but couldn’t without actually sending their APK files. Not only can they do that now, but we can finally give away copies of games!

Here is what you need to know about the promo code system:

  • Promo codes CANNOT be used on in-app subscriptions
  • Promo codes CAN be used on apps/games and non-subscription in-app purchases
  • Each app/game has a limit of 500 promo codes per quarter
  • 500 promo code limit does not roll over unused codes into following quarter
  • Developers can set an expiration date for their promo codes
  • Promo codes can last up to one year

So there you have it! This is a great thing all around to finally arrive. If you’re a developer and want to learn more, Google has all the appropriate documents available here. You can set up a promo code through this link when signed into the developer console.
