Google’s Chromecast hacked and given the GameBoy emulator treatment

While Google’s Chromecast has only been available since the company announced it last week, someone has already hacked the streaming device and stuffed a GameBoy emulator into it. Most people won’t be surprised at the fact that the Chromecast got hacked an something like this was stuck onto it but how games are loaded up and played is actually pretty interesting.

Once the emulator is installed onto the Chromecast, this guy uses the Cloud to actually load the game’s ROM while he uses a computer to send all the input. To prove all of this is actually working, there is a video showing Mario Land being played by the person who pulled this off. According to them, the input is almost instantaneous and apparently the game is running at 50 FPS. Watch the video below to see this in action as well as a cat trying to play Mario Land.

There is a lot one can do with the cloud so it should be interesting to see what other people come up with. Since the Chromecast is a pure streaming device and now we know an emulator can get on there, don’t be surprised if more emulators begin showing up and that could end up only being the start of bigger things to come. IF you want to try this out, the code is available over on GitHub for you tech savvy people.
