Is Amazon looking to get into the console business with one of their own?

A couple of days ago news broke that Amazon was possibly getting into the Android-powered console with a unit of their own that is apparently in development right now and could see its release by the end of this year. While this news is filed under the ‘Rumors’ category of news, it does make sense that Amazon would do this considering they tend to mimic whatever the current hot trend is with Android.

While there isn’t a whole lot of information regarding the actual hardware specs of Amazon’s possible console, one rumor floating around right now has the console being powered by the Qualcomm MPQ silicon and hardware used in set-top boxes and smart TVs. What we can safely assume is that if Amazon does have a console on the way, it’ll probably end up having access to Amazon’s AppStore only unless you feel technically inclined to root the console and stuff Google Play on there.

The only other details that seem to be floating around on the web regarding this is that the console will have its own dedicated controller that will come with it when you buy one. Of course when Amazon was asked if any of this was true, the company responded like most tend to do, stating ‘that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation’.

If this is true and Amazon does have a console coming out, we will post an update when more details are released. As for whether this will be any competition for Ouya, GameStick or MadCatz’s Mojo, we will have to wait and see what the hardware ends up being.
