John Carmack working on mobile support for Oculus Rift through its SDK

Back in July of this year we reported on the news that the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and the company behind it were strongly considering supporting mobile devices in one way or another. Well it looks as though the update to the SDK for the Oculus Rift developers use to create games will soon be getting an update that brings that mobile support to the platform.

Interestingly enough, but not surprising, Android will be getting support first since our OS is a lot more open and allows for development of peripherals much more easily than Apple’s iOS. Apparently John Carmack has been working on the SDK for weeks now with the mobile support being at the forefront of all that work.

John likes to do what he likes to do. He’s got a ridiculous amount of good ideas that he’s working into the SDK. Especially around mobile, frankly. – VP of product Nate Michell

As for when all the new support for Android will arrive in the SDK, there is no exact date announced for that. It doesn’t sound like it’s too far off though.
