Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link is officially cancelled. Square Enix has pulled the plug on the mobile game, making the shocking or maybe not-so-shocking announcement today. Well, this isn’t Square Enix’s first game cancellation announcement, so not many of us were surprised, actually.

The team had been working on it since 2019 and even ran multiple closed beta tests on Android and iOS. In November 2024, they posted on X about the game’s delay. Players who participated in the CBT were a bit taken aback since it seemed like the project was deep in development.

Why Did Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Get Cancelled?

According to the team, even after all that time, they just couldn’t see a path forward that would satisfy players in the long run. The idea was to make it a live-service experience, but apparently, they weren’t able to execute it as expected.

Missing-Link was supposed to be a quirky, GPS-based spinoff that let players travel the world and battle Heartless with their keyblades. It was set during a forgotten chapter of the Kingdom Hearts saga. There was definitely curiosity around how the GPS features would work.

Kingdom Hearts is a popular global name, but it sounds like the concept just didn’t work out in practice. Rather than pushing out something half-baked, Square Enix chose to step back and shift focus.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming!

The team’s focus is now fully on Kingdom Hearts IV. After years of silence, Square Enix finally gave a small update on it. The game was revealed back in 2022 at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event.

Apparently, development on Kingdom Hearts IV is still moving forward. If you’re feeling bummed about Missing-Link, you can at least have some comfort in knowing the main series is alive and well.
