MAME4Droid available on the market, emulates over 2000 romsets

There is a new emulator in town called MAME4droid which was released a couple of days ago. Considering the sometimes short lifespan of emulators on the Android Market, this may be one you want to pick up fairly quickly if you’re into emulators. MAME4droid supports over 2000 different romsets which is a hell of a lot.

MAME4droid comes with some great features including the ability to re-map buttons, support for Android 2.1 and up with 2D hardware acceleration for Android 3.0 devices. Since this is a MAME emulator, you will be able to emulate over 2000 different arcade games on it, which is a lot of arcade games. For those of you hoping it comes with a save game feature, it doesn’t. This is because the MAME system never supported that feature as it was for arcade games.

Instructions:

After installing, place your MAME-titled zipped roms in /sdcard/ROMs/MAME4all/roms folder.

MAME4droid uses only MAME4droid & iMAME4all uses only ‘0.37b5’, ‘GP2X, WIZ 0.37b11 mame romset’. Use “clrmame.dat” file included in /sdcard/ROMs/MAME4all/ to convert romsets from other MAME versions to the ones used by this version, using ClrMAME Pro utility, available in this URL:

The developer has also set up an official site that comes complete with the source code for the emulator so all you tweakers out there can get your hands on it and see what you can do with it. You will probably want to make sure you are using this emulator with a fairly new Android device as well to make sure you have solid performance. You can download MAME4droid off the Android Market for free.
