Mojang will be ceasing development of their card combat game Scrolls

It wasn’t too long ago that Microsoft purchase Minecraft develop Mojang for a ridiculous amount of money, to the tune of $2.5 billion. While it was always stated that development of Minecraft would continue, with very little changing regarding that game, not much was said about the company’s other titles. One of those titles is the company’s multiplayer card combat game Scrolls, and now development will be ceasing for that game.

For those of you not familiar with this game, Scrolls had a pretty long beta which was pretty successful, eventually getting released in full for PC as well as mobile devices. In fact the game has done pretty good for itself for the most part, with a new expansion pack called Echos having arrived earlier this month. However, somewhere from within the Microsoft camp the decision was made to cease development for Scrolls, leaving Mojang with one active game, that being Minecraft.

Mojang made everything official with an announcement on the game’s website:

The launch of the Scrolls beta was a great success. Tens of thousands of players battled daily, and many of them remain active today. Unfortunately, the game has reached a point where it can no longer sustain continuous development.

We won’t be adding features or sets from now on, though we are planning to keep a close eye on game balance. Scrolls will still be available to purchase for the time being, and our servers will run until at least July 1, 2016. – Mojang

Mojang does want the current and possible future player base to know that spending money on Scrolls will still be beneficial to the game, as all funds that come in will be put back into keeping the game active. So the July 1st, 2016 date is just a tentative one should not enough funding come in from the game to keep it going.
