Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin’s newest game, Hinuka Junreitan, is coming to mobile and PC. TOHO Games, Edelweiss, and G2 Studios have revealed Sakuna: Hinuka Junreitan today. It will be a free-to-play spin-off for Android, iOS, and Steam.
First teased in November 2024, the game has now launched its website and official X account. So, the devs are expected to start rolling out updates and future announcements more often. And hopefully, they will reveal the release date soon, too.
The signature rice-farming and action mechanics of Sakuna will be on mobile soon
The original game, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, made its debut in 2020 on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. It has platforming combat with painstakingly detailed rice cultivation, creating an unusual mixture of farming sim and action RPG.
The game’s folklore, combat, and farming became an instant hit. It later inspired an anime adaptation, manga, and the spin-off game Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation. Sakuna Chronicles is still in development by Edelweiss and Marvelous as a separate project.
Hinuka Junreitan will introduce a mobile-optimised structure. That includes item-based microtransactions and live-service elements. On the story front, it will take the Sakuna universe and adapt it into a more ongoing, expandable structure.
Speaking of the story, the original game is about Sakuna, an exiled goddess of agriculture. She balanced managing a paddy field with swinging a magical scarf to grapple enemies and traverse platforms.
In that game, character progression is directly tied to the quality of rice you produce. It will be interesting to see what new features and gameplay additions Sakuna will bring to its upcoming mobile edition.
