The RuneScape MMO will soon be playable on tablets and SmartTVs

RuneScape has been around for a long time, a veteran of the MMO scene who has managed to survive this long in the ever changing landscape that is the MMO universe. Developed of the game are preparing to evolve it, making it accessible on both tablets and SmartTVs to ensure it survives for a long time to come.

While we all wait for Shadowrun Online to arrive on our tablets, we can now take comfort in the fact that even more MMO games are heading our way. Jagex has shared the news on their site that the game will soon be made available for tablets and SmartTVs, allowing players to log in and play RuneScape as if they were playing it on their PC.

I’m happy to report that we also have a dedicated Future Tech team working on bringing the game to your favorite tablets, platforms and even smart TVs in due course. – Mark Gerhard, CEO of RuneScape maker Jagex

Java on the left, HTML5 on the right

The new RuneScape is being developed in HTML5 which means it will be playable on pretty much and platform that supports HTML5. This includes Android tablets, SmartTVs and even Android phones, although playing on a phone might be a bit rough with the UI and everything. Tablets will do just fine though. HTML5 will also make the game look better, as seen in the image above.

Unfortunately we don’t have a release date for when the changes will go live, only that it will be out ‘in due time’.
