OUYA will follow how mobile is done with new hardware every year

For those of you who think the OUYA will be outdated the moment it arrive since Tegra 4 has been announced and devices that will have the Tegra 4 chipset are on the horizon, it looks like OUYA has a plan of their own to stay with the times. The CEO of OUYA, Julie Uhrman, was talking at the DICE summit yesterday where she revealed the company’s new deals with Double Fine and Verse Studios. She also revealed their plans for the OUYA hardware which will be following the same model as mobile phones and tablets do.

OUYA will be getting new hardware each year meaning there will be a new console to buy each time there is a hardware upgrade. This shouldn’t really surprise anyone as it is also the model other consoles used to follow as well usually. Almost every other year we saw a new set of consoles getting released up until the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 hit the store shelves. Mobile devices right now follow this same pattern with new devices arriving each year with better hardware.

During her talk Julie Uhrman said that there will be an OUYA 2, OUYA 3 and so on in order to take advantage of new and faster processors, GPUs and other hardware along with falling prices. She also mentioned that all games will be backwards compatible so you won’t loose that original OUYA game you bought when you purchase and OUYA 2.

Interestingly enough she also mentioned that nVidia has a dedicated team solely working on getting the chip driving the OUYA to run at its highest capacity ever whether it is the current Tegra 3 or the future Tegra 4 chipset.

So what do you think? Is this a good idea for OUYA to come out with a new console each year? At $99 a pop is isn’t going to hit your pocketbook like buying a new Playstation or Xbox.
