Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite, is in the process of being sued by the owners of a Florida tourist attraction called Coral Castle.
The lawsuit rests on the fact that Epic Games included a virtual Coral Castle in the latest season of Fortnite. The issue is not only the shared name, but several other features that the game and attraction have in common such as “nautical/beach motifs, castle structures, partial castle walls, and stone objects”.
Of course, Epic Games is currently embroiled in two much more consequential lawsuits – the ones it brought against Google and Apple for pulling Fortnite from the Play Store and the App Store respectively after Epic attempted to sell in-game currency to players directly at a discount.
Those lawsuits accuse Google and Apple of antitrust violations, arguing that the pair are making it impossible for Fortnite to survive on mobile outside their app stores, which take a 30% cut of all sales.
It’s likely that the Google/Apple lawsuit will take up most of Epic’s lawyers’ time, though they’ll now have to make space in their schedules to argue that “stone objects” are fair game.
