Disco Elysium, the detective RPG, is now out on Android in a mobile-specific format. It launched on PC in 2019 and became a major success, winning multiple awards. The game’s exploration and complexity are what made it a hit.
What’s the plot?
In Disco Elysium, you take on the role of a detective in Revachol, a decaying city filled with grime, ideology and broken dreams. There’s a murder that needs solving, and that’s where you come in. The game is full of dialogue-driven interactions and character-defining choices.
The game has a feature called the Thought Cabinet. It alters how your detective perceives the world, and a wide range of internal voices representing your psyche. You’ll be interrogating suspects, reciting drunken poetry at karaoke and experiencing other strange moments.
What’s different in Disco Elysium Mobile?
The writing is dense and philosophical, just like the original, because the story and narrative are still the same. However, the mobile version feels more like a portable version of the original Disco Elysium.
It plays entirely in portrait mode, with new swipe-based navigation that departs significantly from the PC version. It might seem a bit more linear, locking out areas once you’ve moved past them. Apart from the zero scrollbars, it has shorter text segments and a static camera.
But there’s some good stuff, too, that makes the mobile version more accessible. Zaum Studio, the publisher, has added a 360-degree view system to help mobile players feel more grounded in each scene.
The original voiceover has been paired with new hand-painted visuals in some places, which has helped in keeping the distinctive artistic tone alive.
Disco Elysium Mobile lets you play the opening two chapters for free and then asks for a one-time payment to unlock the rest. Check it out on the Google Play Store.
