A kind Android and PC developer has released an open-source Android port of the old classic Heroes of Might and Magic 2: The Succession Wars, and the APK is available from their GitHub right now for free, no strings attached. It goes by the name of fheroes2 project.

New Life For An Old Classic

The project is an open-source, multi-platform rebuild of the game from the ground up. The team haven’t just ported the game. They’ve worked on creating an improved version that gives you an even better experience than the original.

They have updated the graphics, improved the AI, tweaked the UI to be a little easier to handle, and put in various fixes and tweaks.

It’s the culmination of three years of work by some dedicated developers, and it’s awesome to see passion projects like this reach completion. The Heroes Of Might And Magic 2 Android port is clearly something made for love of the original.

An Oldie, But A Goodie

Heroes of Might and Magic 2: The Succession Wars came out all the way back in 1996, and in the late 90’s was voted the sixth best PC game of all time by PC Gamer. It came into the 4X genre at its early peak, leaving a mark on gaming history.

It tells a tale of medieval intrigue, where two princes are fighting over the throne. You can play as either the morally questionable Prince Archibald, or his exiled brother Prince Roland.

How Does It Work?

The principal is simple enough. The player needs to gather resources, raise an army, and take the fight to the other side.

It’s not all swords and shields though. You’re just as likely to hire wizards and necromancers to help you out. Nothing intimidates opposing soldiers quite like a load of shambling skeletons storming their castle.
