If you love board games, I’m sure you’ve played or at least heard of Catan. Now, it’s getting a new kind of expansion. Netflix and Asmodee are teaming up to bring the classic board game Catan to the screen for the first time.

The game has a range of projects in development. It includes live-action, animation, and even an unscripted series. The partnership aims to reimagine the island of Catan, where settlers trade, build, and occasionally get robbed, as an evolving storytelling universe.

Have you played Catan on Android?

Catan is a multiplayer tabletop game created by Klaus Teuber. It was first published as ‘The Settlers of Catan’ in 1995 in Germany. Players compete to build and develop settlements on the island of Catan. You mainly collect and trade resources like wood, brick, and ore. That’s the board game.

On Android, USM released the first digital adaptation as Catan Classic in 2011. Later, in November 2017, they dropped Catan Universe. This one supports the base game (the original board game), the card game Catan – The Duel, the expansions and Catan – Rise of the Inkas.

Catan Universe lets you play free matches against two other human players. You can play the introductory game of Catan – The Duel for free. Or you can master the ‘Arrival on Catan’ to permanently unlock the single player mode against the AI.

You can check out Catan Universe on the Google Play Store; it’s free to download.

Back to the Netflix projects of Catan, the board game

The project is being produced by Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio, and Klaus Teuber’s sons, Guido and Benjamin Teuber. Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler said that the Netflix collaboration will introduce the game’s world and strategic depth to audiences who might have never picked up a hexagonal tile before.
