Sony buys out cloud-based game streaming service Gaikai

One of the more bits of interesting news flying around the internet right now is the fact that Sony is investing in cloud game streaming and is doing so with the now confirmed purchase of cloud game streaming service Gaikai for a reported $380 million, a bit less than the rumored $500 million Gaikai was apparently looking for a week and a half ago.

So why should this matter to you at all being a mobile gamer? Well this could very well mean that Gaikai’s services will be making their way to future Sony Android devices in the near future and possibly even current ones through an update. Gaikai is already set to come pre-installed on the Wikitab gaming tablet when it launches later this year so playing full Triple-A games on your mobile device through Gaikai is very much possible.

This will also put Sony in the direct line of fire of other game streaming services, namely OnLive, who are already on Android. Granted Gaikai and OnLive services are slightly different, now that Sony owns them though there is no telling what Gaikai could change into. Sony was quite generic and general in their statement about where the Gaikai service will make it’s appearance:

(Gaikai) will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices. – Sony Computer Entertainment President Andrew House

The future of cloud-based game streaming on mobile just got a little more interesting, especially since this could make it’s way to all Playstation certified devices which, as we now know, are not solely Sony branded phones and tablets.
