[Updated] Sony’s possible Nexus X phone images leak, could the rumors be true?

At about the time the Nexus 7 tablet was hitting the Google Play store, rumors of multiple Nexus branded devices coming from multiple manufacturers started to swirl. The rumor was that there would be up to 5 different Nexus devices coming from different manufacturers by the end of this year. Now, with a new set of photos that showcase a Sony phone with Google labeled on the back instead of ‘with Google’, could this be the second Nexus device that will be hitting the Play store soon?

With the LG Nexus 4 on the horizon, this new device in these pictures is currently being called the Sony Nexus X. Both LG and Sony were two of the companies that were in the original rumor to be producing Nexus devices by the end of this year. While there are zero specs for the hardware known right now, this would be the first official Playstation Certified Nexus device to hit the market as it would make little sense for Sony not to make this a Playstation Certified device. The Nexus X looks a lot like a Sony Ion but the phone design seems pretty standard for most of Sony’s phones as of late.

So, what’s the word? Without knowing any of the specs of this phone, the fact that this is coming from Sony is a nice plus, would you be more apt to grab the Sony Nexus X or the LG Nexus 4? That is, of course, if these pictures are real.

Update 11:47am Sept 15th, 2012: Unfortunately, it looks like these pictures have been messed with. Does this mean the device is a fake? Not really but it does mean these pictures have been tampered with which unfortunately takes a bit of credibility away from them. However, this sort of thing did happen back with the Galaxy Nexus as Taylor from AndroidAndMe reminded me of, where it was the real device but the photos were messed with to look fake. In the picture of the back of the Sony Nexus X, fotoforensics points out that the Google Logo, Camera and Flash are all fake in the ELA reading. You can check it out here.
