The Tegra 4 chipset won’t begin shipping until mid-July

For those of you waiting to grab a Tegra 4 device the moment they begin arriving for consumer consumption it looks like you will be waiting a little bit longer. nVidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has come out to say that their next-gen chipset won’t begin shipping until mid-July.

So what does this mean in terms of Tegra 4 Android device availability? Well it means that consumers won’t be able to get their hands on a Tegra 4 device until sometime around August at the earliest and that includes nVidia’s Project Shield as well. That is, of course, manufacturers only take a month or less to plug that chip into their next-gen devices. Realistically, we probably won’t see Tegra 4 devices for sale until September 2013.

We ship Tegra 4 starting in Q2 [of fiscal 2014]. We are ramping production now and we will have full production release. [The second quarter] is when we ship to customers. Q2 is also when we ship the Tegra 4 based Shield device…Although it is in the latter part of Q2, it is going to be in Q2. – nVidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang

That doesn’t mean we won’t be hearing about upcoming Tegra 4 devices until then. You can be sure companies are already working on their next-gen devices for us to throw our money at whether is be a Tegra 4 device or another chipset.
