Want more Square Enix news? How about Final Fantasy VI for Android this Winter and possibly more.

In case you haven’t had your fill of Square Enix news this week with their announcement yesterday that the company would be bringing a majority of the Dragon Quest franchise over to Android in the near future. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed just yet as to whether or not the series (Dragon Quest 1-8 and Dragon Quest Monster blah bah) would reach Western shores, it is most likely that they will since all the mobile Final Fantasy games have been released in the West.

Now Square Enix has announced that they will be releasing Final Fantasy VI this Winter for both iOS and Android but it won’t just be a straight port of the original game from 1994. Instead this new version for mobile will be a modified version with some new enhancements to the game such as combat changes to better suit mobile gaming like previous Final Fantasy releases.

The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same. For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don’t have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is. – director and producer Takashi Tokita

Visually Final Fantasy VI will still feature 2D graphics but they will be refined and more detailed for mobile devices.

This announcement comes on the heels of the recently announced Final Fantasy IV: The After Years which is also due out this year which will be a 3D remake of the original game. Of course when speaking to Kotaku about continuing on this Final Fantasy Legacy project, as the company is calling it, the question arose regarding the possibility of Final Fantasy VII making its way to mobile in the future. The answer – If the Legacy project continues to be a success, Tokita would like to see Final Fantasy VII on mobile devices in the not-so-distant future as well.
