Samsung’s virtual reality headset, the Gear VR, is now available for purchase over at Best Buy although right now it is through their website only. However it could end up being on store shelves as well depending on how sales go. It’s interesting to see this suddenly appearing at Best Buy for sale though since the Gear VR is still considered to be in the early stages of development.
When the flurry of Android-based micro-consoles were being developed and hitting the market, Mad Catz’s MOJO was the leader of the pack and still is considering there hasn’t been any real micro-consoles coming out since then. The Obox from Snail Games isn’t really a micro-console and it isn’t even out yet so that doesn’t really count.
Razer’s entry into the wearable technology sector, outside of the newly announce VR headset of theirs, is a wristband called the Nabu X which was originally announced back in June of 2014. For those of you who missed the first round of pre-orders for US/Canada, tomorrow the 2nd round will start as well as the first round for European residents interested in snagging one of these.
Google’s modular solution for Android devices, called Project Ara, has its own developer conference and today marks the second one of these to be held. The really good thing about this is that if you can’t attend it, which if you are reading this then you probably are not attending, it will be streamed live and you can watch it right here.
One thing there is plenty of at CES every year are headsets, whether the full headband style (with or without mics) or the ear bud kind, there is always a ton of headsets to check out. Most of these are geared towards listening to music and watching video on your smartphone or tablet. However there is also the occasional mobile gaming-centric headset to be found and one of those happens to be Mad Catz’s other announcement.
In the past couple of years Mad Catz has really pushed well into the mobile gaming market with their peripherals and even an Android-based game console called the MOJO. Since the company first dove into the mobile gaming scene, each year we get to see new peripherals to get released and CES 2015 is definitely no exception to this with two new peripherals announced for mobile gamers. There is the L.Y.N.X.9 mobile game controller and the Swarm mobile gaming headset which we will go into in a second article.
While the OBox from Snail Games was high up on our list of things to get some hands-on time with as soon as possible, the company’s two new Android phones were also something we wanted to check out. Snail Games unveiled two gaming-centric Android phones at CES 2015 and while both come with physical controls, the W 3D also features glasses-free 3D.
Today Razer announced their solution to bringing PC and Android games to the big screen with their Forge TV set top box. The company is describing this as a game and entertainment console since it isn’t just made for straight gameplay but also to use services like Netflix, YouTube, and other more entertainment based applications. Along with the unveiling of Forge TV, Razer also unveiled their new Bluetooth controller called Serval and the Turret Lapboard and mouse combo.
One of the more interesting announcements so far, at least in the realm of Android-based gaming, has to be Snail Games’ set of gaming-centric Android phones and their Android-based game console. Snail Games had plenty of both phones, The W and The W 3D, available for some hands-on time as well as the OBox console. We will get into the phones in another article though.
