Nintendo begins teasing an official Mii app, Hell has partially frozen over.

It is no secret that Nintendo has been a strong opponent when it comes to bringing official franchises from their platform onto mobile devices. The company absolutely refuses to consider any of their games for non-Nintendo mobile gaming devices. It’s something that we have reported on a few times in the past and yet, here we are talking about Nintendo and an application that may be coming to mobile devices.

In truth, the official Mii application is actually something we’ve reported on back in November 2014 as coming this year. However considering Nintendo stubborn stance on mobile gaming outside of their own platform, we weren’t holding our breath on anything actually happening. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata was asked about their future regarding smartphones and tablets and true to Nintendo stubbornness, they reinforced their position in regards to porting their games over to smartphones and tablets. That position being it will never happen.

However Mr. Iwata did mention that the company is looking “to develop products that will allow customers to identify with Nintendo products and make people pay attention to Nintendo games” and this is where Mr. Iwata began mentioning the idea of a Mii app.

For example, some Nintendo game consoles incorporate Mii, which creates a digital avatar to represent players. It would be fun for players to use their Mii characters as icons on social media. We are currently developing an application that will allow users to do that. The app will be announced around the time our full-year results are released. – Nintendo President Satoru Iwata

In fact this isn’t the first time Mr. Iwata has talked about making mobile apps and having them integrated into different features Nintendo has on their various consoles and portable gaming systems. However it has been just that, a lot of talking with nothing actually coming to life except for a tethering app for the 3DS which was only released in Japan. This being the second time a Mii app has been brought up by Nintendo does hold a little bit more merit to it and it could actually happen. According to Iwata it already is under development.

Last year Mr. Iwata did say we would see a Mii app get released in 2015. It is 2015 now and he is still talking about it, so you never know. What this isn’t though is Nintendo committing to mobile gaming. That will probably never happen.
