DroidGamers: Android games we are playing this week 5/6- 5/12

Like a middle child, mobile games are constantly vying for our attention. Every week there is a new shipment of mobile games propping themselves on our desks and demands to be played. While we do have dedicated reviewers, sometimes the games can be just as engaging as reviewing your W-2 forms. With the tsunami of new games every week we find our selves repeatedly drowning at the staggering amount of games.

So humbly present “Game’s We’re Playing This Week”, a weekly reflection on outstanding games that deserves longer than your average bathroom romp. Every week members of our staff will sift through the best Android games, new or old basically any games they’ve been playing relentlessly. We’ll choose a couple of them, and share them with you.

This week we’ll be taking a look at a few platformers. We know, we know, platforming on a touchscreen is like ice skating with butter. Rest assured, the list below contains games that sports (hint) some great controls and also impressive visuals .As always we’re on constant lookout for hidden gems, so if you have a game you’d like to share, leave a comment below.

Currently Playing:

Pix’n Love Rush by BULKYPIX.AMA

Google Play: Link

Developers BulkyPix has managed to scratch every single nostalgic bone in my body. See their (as always) iOS port, Pix’n Love Rush, sports the most retro graphics under the sun. If you’ve ever grown up with the green hue graphics of the original Gameboy or would love to play some Virtual boy without straining your eyes close to blindness, Pix’n Love Rush faithfully recreates the charming 8 bit visual of years yonder. The game also strays as far back as the glory days of Game and Watch. Along with the great visual, BulkyPix completes this package with music that screams RETRO.

If you remember the days of covertly switching batteries from the TV remote with your Gameboy’s, you’ll absolutely love Pix’n Love Rush. If you grew up playing told school side scrollers, love all things retro, or just love games, then throw BulkyPix your money NOW!

JAZZ: Trump’s Journey by BulkyPix

Google Play: Link

The developers at BulkyPix must have an endless fountain of artistic juices. Along with the Pix’n Love Rush, the developers are stretching their creative muscles with their (no surprise here) port of the popular iOS platforming game, Jazz: Trump’s Journey. How Jazz and his posse of musicians flew under our radar is surprising but rest assured, this game deserves your attention.

Sporting a pastel colored world, the charming graphics won me over from startup. If you’ve tire of the same cartoony graphic trend (thank you Angry Birds) you’ll certainly fall head over heels with this one. Trump’s Journey follows a musician named Jazz as he follows his dream of becoming a drug fueled Rock Star famous jazz star. The game descriptions explains: ‘Presenting a daring parallel with the real story of Louis Armstrong’ Along the way you’ll gain members to join your musical band all while solving puzzles with your trusty time stopping trumpet. Sure didn’t remember Mr. Armstrong that way.

NBA Jam by EA Games

Google Play: Link

BOOMSHAKALAKA! With the Knicks “Linsanity” craze translating into finally ending the postseason slump, the New Yorker in me jumped in delight. Hoping to get into the spirit of the game, I downloaded EA games 90’s classic NBA Jam. Sports and action games are terrible on touch screen you say? Not going to disagree with that one. In fact, MOST touch control games are atrocious. Not so with NBA JAM. I was dunking and passing alleys like it was nobody’s business in minutes.

If you never stepped on the courts of NBA JAM, don’t be shocked by it’s large headed players and two on two matches. This is tailored more for an arcade gameplay than a virtual sim. With simple controls, you’ll be tossing two’s and three’s like you’re in the NBA (‘cept you Johan Petro!). Drawbacks? No local AND online multiplayer. So smack talks with your friends will have continue to rage until you know, you both grab a basketball and settle it outside.

iDaTank by Ubinuri

Google Play: Link

Our Hidden Gem from two days ago, iDaTank by Ubinuri is a great quirky little action game with RPG elements layered on top of it. You play as a little tank-like robot who lands on asteroids, collecting fuel to power-up and open more portal in order to jump to asteroids in the universe. Your mission: to find the origin of a strange signal pattern that has been picked up and find out what it is.

Visuals are rendered in a unique style of 3D which somehow gives the graphics a sort of soft look to them. If you are a fan of unique indie games, you will want to check this one out. There is a lite free version to try before buying the full version for $0.99.

Delver by Priority Interrupt

Google Play: Link

If you are a fan of retro games and, more specifically, roguelike dungeon crawlers and you haven’t been playing Delver by Priority Interrupt then you are missing out. While the game is still in development, even though it is released, purchasing the game is like funding a title on Kickstarter in a way. All money made from sales goes to developing the game further and basically you become a beta tester.

Delver smacks of awesome all over the place from the retro style 3D visuals to the great dungeon crawler gameplay. As with all good roguelike games, each level is randomly generated which gives this game a lot of replay value. You can pick it up off of the Google Play store for $3.99.
