SteelSeries Free Wireless Controller goes on sale October 2nd

Way back in the beginning of this year during CES 2012 we reported on SteelSeries who were planning on getting into the mobile gaming market with a new game controller called the ION. After we reported on this new portable controller, that can easily fit in your pocket, everything went quiet about when it would start hitting store shelves. Now, we can finally give you an update and the controller’s new name, the SteelSeries Free Wireless Controller.

To recap the features of the SteelSeries Free Wireless Controller for mobile gaming, this little game controller fits right in your palm and yet features everything you would find in a full-sized game controller. You have two shoulder buttons, an A and B button where you would find a Start and Select buttons, two analog sticks, a D-Pad and your typical four button setup on the right. There has been a lot of interest about this new controller by a lot of our readers who have been eager for any sort of update as to when they can get their hands on one.

Well here is the good news, the SteelSeries Free Wireless Controller is set to start going on sale this October 2nd, 2012. For those of you worried about compatibility with games, the protocol that the controller uses allows for the mapping of buttons for any touch-based control schemes that come with mobile games. There is one small hiccup with all of this which could very well sway people away from this handy little controller and that is the price tag. As of right now, SteelSeries is looking at a price of around the £80 (roughly $130) range but considering the convenience it brings with it, this is still pretty enticing.
