Wednesday Morning Fail: Xperia Play launch shipment theft in New Zealand faked by Vodefone

It’s not often we get to use the Epiic Fail picture twice in one week but Vodefone must like it considering what they have done. Yesterday reports were that Vodefone had their entire launch shipment of the Xperia Play stolen from some store in New Zealand. Well the cat is out of the bag and it turns out it was all fake. Bravo Vodafone.

Whatever glue their marketing team is eating is some impressive stuff because to pull something like this and think it is a good thing to do, you must be high. People have already been patient with the Xperia Play releases being short supplied because of the Tsunami in Japan. To go and fake a theft which would cause more delays, at least in New Zealand, is pretty awesome on the stupid scale. So how did word get out about it being fake? They admitted to it!

A Vodefone spokesperson in New Zealand, Matthew East, told The Australian that the entire thing was made up as a publicity stunt. The fact that Vodefone even made up some fake security camera footage is impressive. The entire thing looks to be some sort of contest to find the Xperia Plays and you can win one. However, it would have been better to actually let people know this ahead of time instead of just saying the entire shipment has been ripped off.

In terms of marketing though, this was a pretty huge success considering everyone is reporting on it. In terms of common sense, it is pretty damn stupid. How does the saying go? Bad press is better than no press at all.
