The Cartoon Network looks to continue the Monsters Ate My (insert whatever here) series on Android with the release of a new game soon called Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake. There is already two Monsters Ate My games on Android so this would make the Birthday Cake eating the third game. This will be a lot different than the previous two games though.
Yesterday was the keynote for Google’s 2014 developer conference, Google I/O. They’ve touched on several topics, some of which have gaming relevant ramifications. For starters, with the next OS upgrade (currently called “L”), they touched on two things that will benefit gaming: graphics and battery life. With the former, Google demo-ed some game footage running on the Unreal 4 engine (which currently is for PCs). For the latter, Project Volta was announced to help slow down battery drain by showing users more information about where battery drain is going. While this isn’t directly game-related, more juice means more gaming.
The Google I/O Keynote yesterday brought the announcement of Android One. Android One is a new platform, targeting emerging markets, where Google will create affordable smartphones, in order to help makers of smartphones who face the issues of the endless stream of upgraded phones that come out every year. It is a reference program that will allow manufacturers to easily choose what they want included in their smartphones to keep prices low.
While not specifically a game per se, Transformers: Age of Extinction is an app with game elements that ties in with the upcoming movie of the same name. The app features a bevy of features, all of which involve promoting the movie, obviously. Character Bios, trailers, a photo gallery, and a look at all the new Transformers toys themselves are all a part of the app.
EA and PopCap have been busy lately working on an upcoming expansion for their Plants vs Zombies 2 game which will be called Dark Ages. The revealing of this new expansion happened yesterday with both companies coming together to make the announcement official. A trailer for the Dark Ages expansion was also released.
In an interesting partnership between MMO giant Nexon and Capcom, both companies are working to bring Street Fighter IV Arena to Android. This will be the first exclusively mobile Street Fighter title in the franchise. In fact the game has come along quite nicely as it is already in beta testing phase over in Korea.
Bulkypix has announced that they will be bringing their newly released (onto iOS) vertical shmup to Android in the near future. For those of you not familiar with the term “shmup”, it just means shoot-em-up which is basically an arcade shooter, in this case one that scrolls vertically and not horizontally.
The Last Express is a murder mystery that was originally released for Macs and PCs in the spring of 1997, and has since been ported to Android. It’s set in the days leading up to World War I, and you play the entire game on a passenger train passing through a large portion of Europe, on its way to Constantinople. On the whole, it’s quite unique for for a game. In some ways, it’s a bit like the game Clue, as both games have players confined to a space full of colorful characters that each have their own agenda. You need to navigate those agendas to accomplish your own in solving a murder.
Qwiboo who? You may or may not be familiar with Qwiboo Ltd., a game developer based in London. If you have heard of an insanely popular game on IOS called Bike Baron, then you are more familiar with them than you think. Qwiboo created Bike Baron, which is a Trials (Motorcycle) type game that has been downloaded over five million times in the App Store.
Retro gaming is currently in vogue thanks to platforms such as Google Play, the Apple App Store and Steam. Countless classics have been resurrected on these new platforms, be they ports or HD remakes. The proliferation of retro titles certainly supports the claim. Over the past three years, a proliferation of retro titles have resurfaced such as Contra HD, Castle of Illusion HD, X-Men the Arcade game, Pac-Man, Sonic CD, Jet Set Radio, Final Fantasy III and many other venerable titles.
