Gameloft is teasing a third upcoming game but what exactly is it?

Gameloft is on a roll with new releases lately. We all know that the crowd is very excited about the upcoming Modern Combat 5: Blackout but there is more to come. Rival Knights was also recently revealed as a new jousting game, presented with some well put together trailers, but now we have a third game creeping its way into the “coming soon” lists, however nothing is really known about it.

Since I’ve been keeping a close eye on Gameloft for a while now and I like guessing games, I think we should have one right now.

Disclaimer: Everything in this article (except the artwork) is my own personal guess and is not officially confirmed or hinted at by Gameloft.

All three pictures show human (and maybe elf?) characters, magic and fantasy-theme. Each of the three characters is shown with an element alignment, so far “wood”, “fire” and “rain”. Those are some odd choices considering the standard names used in other games, but I actually like it, sounds less generic that way (just like the character classes in Dungeon Hunter 4). So what could this be? Is it a MOBA game? MMO? A card game? While it’s impossible to tell from the artwork or the tweets about it, Gameloft already has a few fantasy-themed games, which makes people believe this will be a sequel to one of them. That would seem logical, but I think it won’t be the case.

I’ll list a few of their franchises, followed by why I think it doesn’t quite fit there:

Dungeon Hunter (RPG) – the main reason why it doesn’t fit is the information in the tweets. “#BeYourElement” – suggests a choice for magic alignment. A Dungeon Hunter game with only magic classes (or every class being a hybrid) would make it a bit awkward, which is like the change to arenas only in Dungeon Hunter 3 that wasn’t received very well, so experimenting again after just one game doesn’t seem likely.

Heroes of Order and Chaos (MOBA) – the reason for this one is that the current game is still getting new content updates and from what I’ve heard it has a decent size community around it. Adding a sequel would kill off the old game (unless the new one is just bad). I’m not a MOBA fan myself, but I think those games are meant to last more than a single year.

Order and Chaos Online (MMORPG) – this seems to be the most likely guess most people have, and I kind’a agree. The game itself is running for over 4 years now, which for a phone game is pretty impressive (even many PC MMOs have shorter lifespan). However, it’s another game that keeps getting new updates lately, and most importantly – the characters shown are clearly human, while in O&C Online you have several races, so this makes it unlikely (unless their marketing team strategically showed humans only).

Order and Chaos: Duels (CCG) – this also fits well because of the art style. Just look back at the artwork, it would fit in right? On the flip side, it’s just humans in the artwork. CCGs have much more than that (just like O&C Duels). I haven’t played many CCGs myself, and the ones I did do have elemental-alignments as a core mechanic, so it’s really hard to argue with this one. I personally think if the game is a sequel, it’s a sequel to this one.

That is my reasoning why I believe it’s likely that this is not a sequel to an existing game. Also let’s not forget that having two games in the same genre by the same company is not really a good idea since it tends to split the community or leave one game to its inevitable death. So if people are to ask me “what do you think this game is?” my answer would be “a board game” in the style of Talisman. While this is definitely the weirdest guess you’ll see in an article, it’s what I’m personally hoping for. They already have established games in each genre, so if it’s a new game, might aswell be a new genre for them too, and as we all know, board games work great on phones and tablets (not to mention the way the characters are shown reminds me of the miniatures in board games).

So what do you think? Will this be a new game or a sequel? Am I wrong with my own guess? Do you have your own? Feel free to leave your thoughts and reasoning in the comments below and see if between us all we can guess what #BeYourElement is before Gameloft reveals it!
