Masters of the mobile retro games, OrangePixel is currently working on a new title called Space Grunts and are releasing development videos showing off the gameplay while it is being built. What is really intriguing about this game is that it will apparently be a blend of turn-based gameplay and arcade shooter. Of course it will also feature OrangePixel’s unique style of pixel art.

In our first part we explored how Sega overtook Nintendo in the early 90’s to become the biggest video game company in the world. It was through attitude, marketing, and most importantly defining themselves as better than Nintendo. Despite the Super Nintendo’s better graphics card and superior sound board, the Genesis took an early lead in the console wars. It wasn’t to last however, as Sega’s odd obsession with the Genesis forged the beginning of its downfall.
EA has quietly done a soft launch of their next Need for Speed game called Need for Speed: No Limits. This game has already come under fire for a particular IAP that will be included in the game and that is the in-app purchase players have the option of using where they can purchase more gas. Whether this actually made it into the game or not is something we will be finding out shortly.

SNK Playmore has brought another one of their brawlers to Android called Garou: Mark of the Wolves. If you have played any other their other brawlers on Android, or in general for that matter, then you already should have a pretty good idea as to what to expect. For those of you curious, this is part of the Fatal Fury series.
We’ve been following the development of PocketMine since it was created, even using it in our own Minecraft: Pocket Edition server. It has come a long way since its inception, now having a plug-in library, mod tools and all sorts of other goodies. There was regular communication between Mojang developers and Shoghi Cervantes, the developer behind PocketMine, on Twitter quite often. So it should be as no surprise that Mojang has finally brought Shogi on board.
Companion Applications are an interesting concept in a lot of ways because you’re basically trying to take advantage of the mobile gaming industry, and the gaming industry in general, by extending the functionality of your game to include mobile devices. This could be for a lot of reasons and done in many ways, whether it is actually useful features, a second screen feature, news and update, and whatever else a developer can think up in order to make their games look like there is a lot more features to it then there actually is.
So I’ve had this on my chest for a long time, and I think it’s time I unload. I’m not convinced everyone will agree with me, but hear me out. I think Android gaming has problem with the number of games that are offered for free with IAPs, though I *suspect* iOS does as well (See here). And I want to say this at the outset: I don’t hate all IAPs. Paying a set amount once to unlock full content (gaming or otherwise) is just fine me with, as is a running subscription (Netflix, MLB At Bat, etc). My objection comes from how many games are attempting to monetize by applying scammy IAPs, and it’s out of control.
