The enigma of a game called Flappy Bird that has seen a rather huge surge in popularity since its release onto Android and iOS isn’t just a mindless, frustratingly difficult, yet somehow addictive game that you downloaded and now probably waste a ridiculous amount of time playing. No, Flappy Bird is much more than that. It’s a pretty big success when it comes to revenues.

A new endless runner has landed on Android a couple of days ago called The Great Martian War. However, this one isn’t like most endless runners out there in the mobile gaming world and some could say that this one could easily give other much more popular games in this genre, such as Temple Run, a good run for their money.
The currently and strangely popular game Flappy Bird has been invading the world quite nicely. Minecraft, where you can recreate anything and everything pretty much, now has its own Flappy Bird recreation that you can also download and play if you want additional mindless fun in Minecraft.
Pinball Arcade by FarSight Studios is one of the two major pinball platforms on numerous platforms including Android (both mobile and consoles like Ouya). Pinball Arcade up until now would reproduce actual pinball tables that used to exist, and some still do, in arcades and other places, bringing these true to life reproductions to mobile platforms so we could all play them.
Cinemaware is a company not too different than DotEmu in a lot of ways. They both like to bring classic games to mobile platforms but DotEmu has a lot more game releases currently than Cinemaware does. Cinemaware also happens to be porting their own games (for the most part) over to Android while DotEmu specializes in other companies titles.
A rather entertaining little retro looking game is heading our way in a few days called Only One. Developed by Rebel Binary, this game puts you in charge of your character who is somehow on top of a rather large pillar, way up in the sky, with the ultimate goal of pushing your enemies off of said pillar and hearing them scream as they fall to their brutal deaths far below.
For those of you who dig arcade side-scrolling shooters, or shmups depending on what you like to call them, there is a new one that was released the other day called Space Shooter Ultimate. As you would expect with a good shooter, you have plenty of levels to work your way through and boss fights to deal with.
Flappy Bird is an enigma. It looks like something chroma-keyed onto a sitcom smartphone. I imagine that, from the outside, this is what people think mobile gaming is all about. It’s almost self parody; a perfect encapsulation of all that’s good and bad in mobile gaming culture (not entirely unlike the fake-then-real, but horrible,Unicorn Apocalypse).
Well it is that time again for another round-up of Android games on sale this weekend. There is actually not a huge difference between this week’s mid-week round-up and this one besides a few additions to the list like the Construction Simulator 2014 and Hot Springs Story.
Soul Fjord is a rare type of game. It’s ambitious, it possesses a strong, defining sense of style, place and time. It’s marriage of 1970’s Funk and Norse Mythology feels completely natural. It’s one of the rare instances of a game that attempts of a Tarantino-esque mash-up of style and genre, and under the leadership of Kim Swift, Soul Fjord pulls this off deftly.
