Yesterday was the keynote for Google’s 2014 developer conference, Google I/O. They’ve touched on several topics, some of which have gaming relevant ramifications. For starters, with the next OS upgrade (currently called “L”), they touched on two things that will benefit gaming: graphics and battery life. With the former, Google demo-ed some game footage running on the Unreal 4 engine (which currently is for PCs). For the latter, Project Volta was announced to help slow down battery drain by showing users more information about where battery drain is going. While this isn’t directly game-related, more juice means more gaming.

The app features a bevy of features, all of which involve promoting the movie, obviously. Character Bios, trailers, a photo gallery, and a look at all the new Transformers toys themselves are all a part of the app.

Whilst many sites have spoken of this as a rumor Variety.com has reported that the deal has already been made. Either way, there’s no smoke without fire, especially if the reports of Twitch turning down Microsoft in favor of Google are true.

Back in March of this year we mentioned that Nintendo was toying around with the idea of companion apps to extend the experience of their games. In that case we were talking about Animal Crossing at the time. Nintendo has long had a stanch refusal to move into the mobile market which as been reported on a few times already. However, due to a combination of terrible Wii U sales, sinking company-wide profits, and other factors, it looks like Nintendo is now finally moving into the mobile space with these companion apps and their first release confirmed as a Mario Kart 8 app.
While we may never see an official Pokemon game make it to mobile devices anytime soon, The Pokémon Company International wants everyone to be at least able to watch all the Pokemon episodes they could ever want. One thing that has been a pretty major pain in the ass is trying to live stream mobile games on services like TwitchTV. Generally you have to come up with your own solutions to get this to work and half the time it is generally too slow to run through an emulator or anything like that. Lag is another issue half the time. The advent of Android-powered micro-consoles has helped this a bit though.
